Dilwale Has Good First Week

Dilwale has had a good first week of around 97 crore nett though the trend over the weekdays is average. For a normal film a 20% drop from Monday to Thursday would be good but Dilwale is an event film and although the weekend was strong it was not an optimum release which meant less business was consumed over the weekend so the weekdays should have done better. Also the weekday business is less than Bajirao Mastani despite a much better weekend.

The film has fared very well in West Bengal, Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. In the latter it will become the highest Hindi grosser of the year in just ten days.

The problem is all the above markets are not the core Hindi markets and that is where the film has suffered. Mumbai circuit has had strong competition from day one so the performance in Mumbai is understandable but North and Central India should be collecting much better especially the latter as its masala genre and central India normally leads for the genre.

The film does not have a problem for recovery as the first week in India is big enough with reasonable holds and Overseas is huge but eventually the India theatrical business will not be the sort that is expected from a big Shahrukh Khan film. The 300 crore nett number going around was never going to happen due to two films releasing together but 200 crore nett or close to it was a realistic expectation but it is going to fell short of that.
