Durgadevi (Farida Jalal) is unable to stop her son Pratap (Nana Patekar) gambling and asks him to leave the village. Pratap comes to Mumbai where Laxmidas (Paresh Rawal), chawl owner decides to adopt Pratap. Laxmidas's real son Atul (Atul Agnihotri) falls in love with Mamta (Mamta Kulkarni), who is the daughter of a builder named Yograj (Tinnu Anand). Chattursingh Chita (Danny Denzongpa) and Yograj plan to build a resort and the desired location is owned by Laxmikant.
Citing problems, Yograj agrees to get his daughter married to Laxmikants son. Soon enough Laxmikant comes to know of Yograjs intention but all in vain as he is killed by Chattursingh. Meanwhile, lacklustre and alcoholic Pratap is given a rude awakening when he meets with journalist Megha Dixit, and decides to instill some sense of justice and fair play within his community, and get them to assertively defend their rights and freedom.
He is met with resistance, both from within his very own community, the police, and some very powerful and influential politicians. Unable to bear the injustice, and frustrated at his community to act proactively, Pratap decides to take the law into his own hands, resulting in chaos, violence, and uncertainty for everyone, and a path to his own grave.
