Farmer Sarbjit Singh (Randeep Hooda) lives with his family in a small village on the border between India and Pakistan. His nightmare begins when he inadvertently strays across the border after a few drinks and is swiftly detained by the Pakistani army.
They accuse him of being Manjit Singh - the terrorist responsible for a string of bombings in Lahore. He's soon convicted and jailed. But Sarbjit's sister Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) refuses to give up hope and embarks on a 23 year campaign to prove her brother's innocence and secure his release.
