The box office clash is said to cut into business of films clashing with each other and we have probably been guilty to this on some occasions but it may not be all that bad. Obviously there are a lot of factors involved but it does look that a clash on a festive period can provide better results than a release on a normal day for most films. This can be seen by the box office results of Shivaay and Baadshaho, these films are very similar in appreciation but there will be a difference of 18 crore nett in the business in the favour of Shivaay despite it being involved in a clash with another film (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil). Baadshaho had a holiday release as well but its nothing like the Diwali period. It can be said with utmost confidence that Shivaay would not have done 85 crore nett business if it released on the date of Baadshaho and on the other hand its certain that Baadshaho would have done more than 67 crore nett if it released on the Shivaay date with the clash.

There is another example of Bajirao Mastani v Dilwale. Here the whole Christmas period was mainly left to Bajirao Mastani as Dilwale found no appreciation and the film went on to do 185 crore nett. Its not as if this film was loved all over, it was mainly a Maharashtra blockbuster but still 185 crore nett came and that had a lot down to the period. Now Padmavati is coming which is very similar to Bajirao Mastani and has to do more than Bajirao Mastani to cover and even if the film is liked this theory may come out true as 185 crore nett without the festive period holidays could prove a tall order. Not only that even Dilwale on a normal date could find it hard to reach 140 crore nett. This film did not sustain well but without Christmas it could have been much worse.

It does point to a festive period clash giving better results than a normal release date especially as our business is now going to a different level on holidays and holding films up even if the films are poor. This can be seen with Tubelight which despite being rejected by the second day it still held very well through the holiday period. It is about judgement as you cant take on a Bahubali or Dhoom type of film as it will stream roll the opening and if the audience likes then will give you no chance but generally there does look more hope for better results on a festive clash than a normal release date. As long as the film you clash with is not that genuine event film then then the recent box office results are saying that a festive clash is actually a plus today.
