If you can’t be one up over the audience you have failed as a writer. Today’s writers should write one line in bold & stick it up at a place where they can see it everyday “DO NOT TAKE YOUR AUDIENCE FOR GRANTED”. They are far more intelligent than any writer in this world. This film tells us the same old story that Aziz Mirza has already told us in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman & Yes Boss. If you reflect on the character of Shahid Kapur who will notice that his character is a mix of Raj of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman & Chalte Chalte & Rahul of Yes Boss. In fact, Shahid Kapur’s character is called “Raj”. It felt like Aziz Mirza was forced out of retirement to direct this film.
The young look & the idea of shooting in Canada seems to be the brain wave of Haroon Mirza, son of Aziz Mirza & co-director of this film. I wonder why he was credited separately. If he is the co-director the credit should say directed by Aziz Mirza & Haroon Mirza. The screenplay by Vibha Singh & Sai Kabir stretches itself to infinity & drags in the 2nd half. I believe if the film had been within 2 hours it wouldn’t have been so disappointing. Even though the music is good two songs Aai Pappi & Soniya Ve are forced in the narrative. Thank fully one song comes during the end credits as if it’s a norm to have a song in the credits.
Mr Mirza, You also succumbed to the dictates of commercial cinema. Ek Punjabi gaana daal do, do item song daal do, foreign mein shooting karte hai, I mean what was the point of setting the film in Canada. I could think of only one reason. Good eye catching visuals. Why waste Mr Binod Pradhan’s time to do a job which any other cinematographer would have done. Amongst the performance the only person who makes your viewing easy is Shahid Kapur. I bet you this guy will go places very soon. My bet is Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kameeney will be Shahid’s turning point as an actor. He could have stayed away from this role because he has played this kind of role before but still he oozes charm, charisma & honesty in his performance. Vidya Balan has to really come up with some performance to match Parineeta. Here she tries hard to fit in to a commercial heroine mould but she is not a heroine material yet. She is still a fine actor who needs some solid characters to showcase her skills which does not include Dancing for sure because Vidya can’t dance saala. The only performance besides Shahid that stands out is Himani Shivpuri’s act as a loud Punjabi housewife. It’s a hilarious performance.
Final few Words: I will wait for another few years before Mr. Mirza finds the right connection with his audience till then I would rather watch Yes Boss yet again. But if you enjoy doses of romance, comedy, drama & some naach gaana head to the theatre to Konnect your Kismat with this one.
