A Wednesday

Friday 5th September 2008 15.00 IST

Rony D'Costa

I saw Singh is King & Bachna Ae Haseeno in paid previews. Both saw a full house. I saw this film also at a paid preview. We were around 20 to 30 people. Does Wednesday deserve to get a full house? Yes, it deserves to be seen by everyone. A Wednesday is a thriller with a message. It engages you right from the first frame to the last frame. The screenplay is well crafted and till the first half is very fresh but it falters in the second half. Certain clichés come into play, it gets a little predictable, and towards the end it gets preachy. But, what saves the film is its engaging screenplay, deft direction & a fabulous starcast.

Naseeruddin Shah is spell binding as the man who holds the city to ransom. Anupam Kher delivers a note worthy performance after a long time. His body language is impeccable. Though they don’t have any scenes together except one their chemistry as actors pitted against each other is phenomenal. I would say both of them are to Hindi cinema what actors like Robert De Niro & Dustin Hoffman are to Hollywood. Jimmy Shergill impresses in a role unlike what he has done before. Aamir Bashir is one of the most under rated & consistent performers of Hindi cinema. Deepal Shaw surprises in her role of a TV Journalist. Neeraj Pandey makes a decent debut as a director but excels more as a writer. Some of the dialogues are superb in the film especially between Naseer & Anupam. Fuwhad Khan captures the city efficiently. Each & every technician has done a fantastic job in the film. There is no false note. The theme of terrorism is dealt in a much understated manner so much so that the message comes across only in the last few reels of the film. A film like this deserves to be seen in the theatre. I am waiting for the day when a film like this gets an opening like the other two films I mentioned at start.

Last few words: it will take just 100 minutes of your time but will give you an exciting & enriching movie going experience. A good watch, any day of the week.
