Right from the first scene this film hooks you to its screenplay. The opening credits are to die for. I actually got a lump in my throat. The charm of the screenplay lies in its quiet moments, perfect casting and an ensemble performance. Two thumbs up for the casting director. Not even a single actor hits a wrong note. Even the smallest parts like Farhan’s friend and Konkona’s friend who plays an assistant dance director are a treat to watch. Hats off to Zoya Akhtar for crafting such a fluid screenplay. Even though you know the story is something which you might have seen before the screenplay gives you a sneak peek into the life’s of the rich and famous and also into the life of the talented & not so famous. Moments which are my personal favorites are Hrtihik’s scene with the urchins, the moment when at the audition a guy ask’s Farhan to fill the form because he doesn’t know English and the scene in which Rishi Kapoor breaks down. The screenplay is filed with moments and scenes which will stay in your head and you heart for a long time.
Javed Akhtar fills up the screenplay with some of the finest dialogues. Zoya Akhtar makes one of
the best directorial debuts of recent times. With this film she has set a benchmark that she
herself will find hard to perfect. The music supports the film well. Actually it is the choreography
which takes the music to a different level altogether. Yeh Zindagi, Baawre, Sapnon Se Bhare
Naina are songs that stand out because of their choreography. Farhan takes a giant leap forward
from Rock On. Konkona is a delight to watch on screen. Rishi Kapoor outshines himself with this
role. Finally someone does justice to the actor in him after Damini which was way back in 1993.
Final few words: “Yahan Saare Chehre Hain Maange Hue Se
Nigaahon Mein Aansoo Bhi Taange Hue Se
Badi Neechi Raahen Hain Unchaaiyon Ki
Yeh Saaye Hai. Yeh Duniya hai.”
****(Very Good)
