Woh Tera Naam Tha tells the story of a maestro of Hindustani music, Ustad Samad Khan (Amrish Puri) and his beautiful daughter Reshma (Kanchi Kaul). The story set in 1956, when the state of Madhya Pradesh was formed with Bhopal as its capital.
Badruddin (Gaurav Chanana) a Tangewala is the neighbor of Samad Khan since childhood. He has a deep rooted and secret passion for Reshma. Things could have been smooth for Badrudin had Akhtar (Arjan Bajwa), a photojournalist from Delhi not come to Madhya Pradesh. He falls in love with Reshma at the first sight.
While Badruddin is in love with Reshma, another cheerful neighbourhood girl Naseem (Shalini Pal) is in love with Badruddin. Badruddin, without knowing the obsession of Akhtar with Reshma, helps him find an accommodation in the area. Both become friends.
Nawab Hyder Ali (Rajeev Verma) and his son Basharat (Rajat Bedi) enter the scene where there are already four persons involving in love. Basharat, for his part, falls in love with Reshma but she refuses to reciprocate positively. Kishan (Prem Chopra), a friend of Samad Khan is in favour of Akthar's strong love.
Basharat, terribly dejected with the failure in his attempts to woo Reshma, turns violent. He takes recourse to terror. How Reshama and others manage to withstand Basharat's wrath? What happens to Badruddin's love? Whom Reshma marries finally? What is the fate of Naseem's love?
