Gopal returns from overseas to the waiting arms of his affectionate and loving father, Raja Ram Pratap Rai. Gopal's biological mom had passed away, and since then Ram had re-married another woman, who does not welcome Gopal as affectionately.

Gopal finds out that the villagers are being mistreated by Vijay Bahadur, the cruel and oppressive brother of his step-mother, and he sets out trying to undo the wrongs, only to run into opposition from his step-mother, and his very own father. He decides to leave home, and re-enter the village with a new identity, that of Garibdas, an illiterate and obnoxious unemployed man, with results that will change his life forever.
