The year looks heading for record cumulative figures with 3650 crore in the bag already in terms of GROSS box office. GROSS is being used to compare as there have been tax changes in the last year or so. The year should come out with a 10% improvement over last year if the last few big releases of the year give the expected performance.
This performance has come without the big festival releases firing so on that note its good results for the year but these big ones are a must to really push the Hindi film industry to higher levels. The boost has come from smaller films which are doing better than a couple of years back when 75 crore nett was a huge task for these films. The difference is that makers have come out of that urban zone film and padded these films with music to make them more appealing.
Its very rare for a small film to be a universal HIT but Stree managed that feat and the last time this happened was Aashiqui 2. No doubt Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Badhaai Ho and Raazi have also done very well in this period but they have not done well across the board like Stree or Aashiqui 2.
The footfalls look like staying in the same range as last year as the growth is coming from higher ticket prices. The footfalls can only go up if the big films really perform and that 200 crore nett mark is still proving a big benchmark when it should not. There are three major releases left with 2.0 (Hindi), Zero and Simba but it cant be said that 200 crore nett is a given for each of these films but when looking at the budgets and names behind these films then 200 crore nett should be a foregone conclusion.
