More importantly for the Punjabi film industry is that a genre outside comedy has worked in such a big way. The industry was stagnating as 90% of the films being made were comedies and while budgets were going up business was not. Punjab 1984 is an emotional period drama and is totally different from what has worked in Punjab for the last 30 years or so as far as Punjabi films are concerned.
The film will collect around 5.75-6 crore nett in East Punjab in week one which is the second highest first week figure ever and with the fantastic appreciation it has received the 10 crore nett lifetime total will not be difficult.
Punjab 1984 has outstanding performances by Diljit Dosanjh, Kiron Kher and Pawan Malhotra and been been written and directed by Anurag Singh without the usual commercial trappings which makes its huge box office success even more outstanding.
