Kesari has done huge business in Delhi city and Punjab state but the real victory for the film is the business outside these two areas. The business outside may not be record breaking and comparatively less than Delhi city and Punjab but for this film the numbers are very good.

It will do a nett of around 115-120 crore nett outside Delhi city and Punjab state and although the film is not a Punjabi film it is very close. The film cant be called niche as it has a canvas and is a larger than life story but it is very regional and despite that has managed to bring in big numbers. The trailer was very much in Hindi language but the film itself has a huge use of Punjabi and even at crucial moments which is probably to keep the film authentic as possible as all the main characters are sardaars.

The languages are pretty similar but still in places like West Bengal, Nizam / Andhra and Maharashtra the mass audience will find it hard to relate. Actually they have found it hard to relate as the second week business from these parts is mainly high end multiplexes. Despite this the film will collect over 6.50 crore nett in West Bengal and Nizam / Andhra and its these sort of numbers in these sort of areas which have made the film a HIT. It is here the film could have gone wrong box office wise despite being a good film but it managed to go through.

The Delhi / Punjab numbers were a given as that audience will understand the film better and relate to it more but these two alone cannot give you a 150 crore nett apprx lifetime total and to be around 10% less than a Hindi entertainer like Total Dhamaal outside Delhi / Punjab is a big achievement for a film which is so regional. In fact a place like West Bengal will beat Total Dhamaal and even Bihar may top it.

It can be said that the Punjabi could have easily been toned down but authenticity and detailing seems to way the period films go today as the region it is based in may not accept it if the authenticity is not there which is a huge risk.

Gadar (2001) was also based on a true story but there the second half was totally changed  to create that bombastic all India mass blockbuster and it was that second half which got the sort of reception which has probably never been seen in Indian theatres till now. These changes allow you take cinematic liberties as you wish to create a mass film for a wider audience. Though whether its for better or worse you will only find out when the film releases. The Punjabi film on the story of Gadar stuck to the original story and released a few years before Gadar was a box office disaster. Last year Padmaavat was also a fictionalized true story and did big numbers though was not a Gadar.

Kesari did not go the fiction route as Gadar and stuck to the original story which kept the film regional but despite this the collections have still come in areas where the film will had less relatabilty.
