Mulan has fared poorly in China with collections of $8 million on day one. The first Mulan had bombed badly in China when it was released in 1999 with collections of just $52k. This time it was supposed to be a different story with Disney banking on a big response in China for the $200 million budget film. The pre sales suggested a lukewarm turnout and that is what happened.
The film had fared pretty well in other countries of the Far East like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand but the important market of China does not look like doing the business. The film was released on PVOD in North America last week and its said to be a moderate response.
Tenet last week had collected $8.35 million on the first day and now has a total of around $43 million after eight days. Inception in 2010 had collected $68 million and that does look out of reach for Tenet. Both Tenet and Mulan cost around $200 million and recovery will be tough for both mainly due to Covid19. But Tenet took the theatrical route worldwide and Mulan took a mix of theatrical and PVOD and even despite Covid19 the Tenet route of theatrical has yielded better results.
