The pandemic has hit the box office hard across the world but USA has been hit worst going by the amount of revenue lost over the past year but now the markets seems to in good shape and giving encouragement for new releases.

Godzilla Vs Kong released a few weeks back and has crossed the $80 million mark and could go near the $100 million mark. There is a small outside chance of $100 million which would be a first in the States post the pandemic but for that the film will probably needs to go on a long run.

This week will see Mortal Kombat release and the market is expecting a healthy $15-20 million weekend and then there is another major release with the Japanese film Demon Slayer The Movie which is the highest grossing film ever in Japan. This film is also has expectations in the $15-20 million range which means a $35-40 million total is possible from these two films. Also post the pandemic the expectations are kept in check so it would be no surprise if both the film come out towards the top end of the range or even higher than the range.

The highest opening foreign film in USA till date is also a Japanese film as Pokemon The First Movie grossed around $30 million over the first weekend way back in 1999. Its unlikely Demon Slayer The Movie will break this record but it could become the highest opening foreign film outside the Pokemon films if it gets a $18 million weekend. Pokemon The Movie 2000 (2000) is second best with a weekend of $20 million.

The audiences are slowly returning to the theatres in USA with the help of a huge vaccination drive which is getting rid of restrictions across most the states in the country.
