Drishyam 2 has given the industry the biggest boost post pandemic as it heads towards a possible 15 crore nett opening. Even if the film falls a little short of 15 crore nett it will still be the second biggest opening for outright Hindi films this year and third highest post the pandemic. It is not just India but the film also has taken a good start overseas where Ajay Devgn films dont generally open well.

This biggest reason why Drishyam 2 boosts morale is because its the type of film which was the bread and butter of the industry before the pandemic. The likes of Brahmastra and Sooryavanshi can come but these films cannot come week in week out so it is about that middle film getting the box office numbers for survival.

This could also be a turning tide for the industry with Drishyam 2 coming on the heels of Unchaai which got an audience in even though it was minimal though only time will tell if the tide has actually changed. Drishyam 2 is that content type of film without action or hit music which does not mean it cant do well but its always expected to work from day two and not day one. There is also the eight week window which has been around for a few months and that could be helping a little by now.

The film also illustrates the importance of  Maharashtra / Gujarat today as not many films have opened well here especially Maharashtra post the pandemic but as the first film did well in these pockets it has given Drishyam 2 a big boost. The concern here will be that much of the initial has come as Drishyam (2015) had far higher brand value than anyone could think of and maybe if it was another name it may not have opened so well despite the same content. Bhool Bhulayaa 2 also had franchise value and if this keeps on happening we will be left with only franchises.
