Dunki has taken a decent start which is actually good for the type of film it is which is not really for that first day audience but the issue when names like Shahruklh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani involved then the expectations are high and you already had those 40 and 50 crore nett numbers doing the rounds before release which was never going to happen anyway.
The film gets extra pressure due to the numbers of the last two films of Shahrukh Khan which set initial records but in todays time the genre cant be taken away so a 30 crore nett first day number was always going to be the target for a good solid start. It remains to be seen if the film can get there as there are some release issues due to clash and fight for screens with Salaar especially on the single screen side. This has been seen before and eventually in these sort of clashes its the content which decides what happens as both parties stick to their guns.
The initial is better where Shahrukh Khan films open better like in the South and West Bengal. Delhi NCR and Mumbai city also have good collections but outside its every average and even though the film is based in Punjab the collections there are low. It is a risk to make a Punjab based film today as for these films that market normally leads but today it is struggling to collect. Even films like Gadar 2 and Animal with huge Punjab flavour took time to get going in Punjab (political). The collections outside South India become more important here than a Jawan and Pathaan as Salaar will make it tough for Dunki to get the big numbers there in the long run.
The plus for the film is that with Xmas its about the period of 12 days till New Years Day and with a clash that becomes even more important as the daily collections are just not going to be high enough but to benefit reports have to be on the side of the film. Basically because of the period the opening is more than good enough if the public likes the film.
