The main new release this week was Madgaon Express and it opened to poor houses. The film is a small film but within the industry it did hold some expectations as the trailer was liked. The film is a comedy but the trailer was not really funny but this maybe because of the new faces and the comedy does not hit home like it would with known faces.
The film also does not have hit music which can change the trajectory of a film wihout face value. Madgaon Express has been released with a buy one get one free offer which will help the first day collections but remains to be seen to what extent. This is probably to get some crowd in and hope the film has merits and the audience likes. It is dangerous but you cant really blame makers as they probably think the film has some merits but how do you get the public in with no face value and no hit music and on top its a youth film where you need an audience to come initially..
The plus is probably that it is an attempt to be a mass comedy though more for the Maharashtra and possibly Gujrat audiences. There does not look much in the film for the audinces in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar etc.
Last year a film like this could have been pretty much written off with an opening like this but at present Mumbai circuit is doing well and places like Thane and Pune are collecting very well so if the film is good enough you give it a chance in this circuit and its a big circuit. The film has competition from a Marathi film Swatantrya Veer Savarkar which has opened better in Maharashtra and Madgaon Express probably could have done without this competition.
