The website will probably be shut down for a day or two over the next few days as it goes through an update process. This should have been done sometime ago but with these mainstream sites taking data without permission it makes you think is it worth it and on top some things making the Friday process tougher dealing with the film industry.
We would not even know that data is taken until someone sends as no one checks other box office reports here as its irrelevent for us. One of these mainstream websites Pinkvilla seems to have been doing it for years and even collections of the likes of Krrish 3, Kick, Housefull franchises are same which is pretty impossible as we know how this data is formed and others websites cant be same unless stealing. Even circuit numbers get taken without any permission whatsoever so its a bit of a joke but all you can really do is inform and hope its not done anymore and taken off.
We never interact with media and journos so are clueless who this lot is barring the older lot from before 2003 but they should copy from some other website who may actually appreciate it as their work is getting is importance. For us whats the point of building a database of figures when others are going to copy as their won work. There could be others as well but this one was forwarded as its probably more popular. Sadly there no ethics with this media though credit to the likes of Forbes, Deadline, Variety or Hollywood Reporter who do things a different way and always ask.
The other big issue for the delay is the feeding going on which is aplenty. The problem on the Friday becomes when you try to call it out as you get reminded of the films that were not called out. This makes things very hard and the reason those films were not called out was not because of the players involved as most think but because they were doing exceedingly well so why talk about the feeding. But eventually they would have been called at some point but no ones really sees that. In fact these are the ones which are a bigger problem for us as it stops you writing articles like 3 crore footfalls as the fakes ones will come in which leads to that feeding talk so best left alone. Feeding is cheating but its happening and will continue.
This feeding is here to stay as the exhibitors want it and agencies have popped all over the place and it is generally encouraged. So when everyone wants it then who are we to complain. From here on no one be called out at time of release on this site as it makes life easier but the films with feeding will be reported very matter of fact and then maybe 3-6 months down the line it maybe mentioned in some comparison article. This is the best way as either its every film or none.
The idea of the website was to bring 100 years of box office with footfalls being the comparison but that does not work as some periods the footfalls went really high like in the case of multistarrer era post Sholay and then low when the industry shifted from single screens to multiplexes. So it has to be through the verdicts which comparisons can be done as there may well be 2 crore footfall films which actually did not do that well in many 1980 or 1982. Today a blockbuster like Drishyam - The Conclusion will not do 2 crore footfalls.
There was also some data which was slightly wrong which led to wrong numbers (pre 2008) as was machine calculated with wrong permutations but now its been manually entered. Its minor changes but you have to do when you know its not quite right though even left alone it would hardly make much difference. There have many articles here that claimed film x or y from the past had x collections or footfalls but those were assumptions and wrong sometimes but now its been tabulated so those mistakes will not happen.
There have been 200 odd films added from the olden era and though you would want to do much more but as others scrap the data it will a process and slowly more and more data will be entered. There will be also be South films and done in the same way as we do Hindi films as one day is one day and not two or three. A weekend is 3 days not five. They will probably be different from the figures out there but again its always best to be not aware what is out there so lets you do how you want to do. The aim is to keep all the figures as simple as possible and not clutter everything together.
