Sooryavanshi has pretty much bought the business for Hindi films back to normal as can be seen by the circuit numbers. There are issues at places but generally as can be seen by the figures below the film is comparable to the Diwali releases like Golmaal Again and Housefull 4. The Delhi NCR area and Gujarat / Saurashtra look pretty much same as they were before the pandemic.
The lower business has generally come in UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh as these areas have lost cinemas and slowly as business gets better new cinemas will come up. The other area was East Punjab but here it was a different reason and may be a sign that competition could lead to under performing when competition starts for Hindi films.
The market in East Punjab was enjoying a good run and the three Diwali releases (Sooryavanshi, Eternals, Paani Ch Madhaani) were expected to collect 4.50 crore nett plus between them on day one but could only do 3.25 crore nett with Sooryavanshi taking 55% of the share.
Translating this to all India means that the market is not yet ready for a 45-50 crore day though 35 crore nett plus can come. It was all good when there was a film a week in East Punjab but when competition hit then the audience got shared and the audience at the moment is not at the level of what it is before the pandemic.
There was the issue of farmer protests which meant Sooryavanshi had to be taken off at a few cinemas but this was not there with Paani Ch Madhaani and Eternals which underperformed also. Some of the Sooryavanshi underperformance could also be down to Haryana being at 50%. The Maharashtra flavour of Sooryavanshi would also have played a part but that would be post the opening.
The next two months will see an overload of films and in this scenario competition will play a huge part as to where films go in the final run. The December / January period will be very interesting but hopefully more of the audience will also return by then.
