The box office in USA showed more positive signs this week as the long weekend cumulative total hit $100 million for the first time since last March. A Quiet Place - Part 2 raked up $48 million over its three day weekend making it the biggest opener since the pandemic started beating the $32 million of Godzilla Vs Kong.
The Godzilla Vs Kong numbers was good considering the pandemic but with A Quiet Place - Part 2 the number was good be it pandemic or no pandemic. The film is not the blockbuster type of film but it shows huge numbers are around the corner when the bigger films come. The numbers also came with most of Canada closed.
The other new release Cruella also opened well with a weekend of $21 million which is the fourth best opening since the pandemic after A Quiet Place - Part 2, Godzilla Vs Kong and Mortal Kombat. Cruella had a same day release on Disney Plus which would have hit collections. A Quiet Place - Part 2 was a only a theatrical release. The top opening weekends in USA / Canada since the pandemic started last March are as follows.
1. A Quiet Place: Part 2 - $47.4 million
2. Godzilla Vs Kong - $31.6 million
3. Mortal Kombat - $23.3 million
4. Cruella - $21.3 million
5. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train - $21.1 million
