Valimai grossed around 73-74 crore nett across India over its extended four day weekend as it scored very well in Tamil Nadu while other places were not good with Hindi circuits being awful. But at the end of the day its about the home territory and Valimai has done very well in Tamil Nadu. There was a huge drop of almost 60% on day two after a record start but the film steadied itself on Saturday and managed a very good weekend total.
The film compares well with Master which released a year ago though that film had 50% capacity restrictions in Tamil Nadu but its is said most exhibitors did not adhere to these restrictions. Master had a five day weekend and did around 67 crore nett in Tamil Nadu while Valimai has done around 61 crore nett in four days.
The interesting thing here is that Master stars Vijay Joseph and Valimai has Ajith Kumar and these are the two stars in the race to rule the Tamil film industry after decades of Rajnikant domination. It remains to be seen which film here comes out on top but odds are on the Vijay Joseph starrer as it has a 6 crore nett lead after a longer weekend. Generally for bigger films in South a huge ratio of the final business comes in the first weekend.
If we look at the race between the actors which is probably more interesting for the fans of Tamil cinema. Actually it should be said for neutral watchers of Tamil cinema as in the media you have ridiculously insane opening numbers of Valimai and at the time of release of Master there were things like it is biggest film in Tamil Nadu ever beating Bahubali - The Conclusion which is also laughable going by the available real numbers reported by cinemas. So obviously lines are drawn and you are either on this side or that side with real numbers going out of the window and basic ethics take a back seat. It also shows the stardom of these guys in the state as the media also becomes fanboys and takes side.

Looking at it from the outside it does seem that Vijay Joseph is the undisputed winner outside Tamil Nadu (not counting our circuits as both have very little value here). But in Tamil Nadu it looks much closer though Vijay Joseph is having a slight edge due to more bigger opening films but now Valimai with Ajith Kumar has set a new all time record in Tamil Nadu. Before this Ajith Kumar also had the biggest blockbuster of Tamil cinema post Enthiran (2010) with Viswasam (2019) and this happened despite the film clashing with a Rajnikant starrer Petta (2019).
Only Bahubali - The Conclusion has seen more success in Tamil Nadu than Viswasam since 2010. This is all from a completely numbers point of view and obviously other things come into play like genres, music, grandeur and hype of the film but from the outside its easier to look into numbers than get into that.. These guys will have more releases in the near future so lets see how it plays out in Tamil Nadu.
