The industry is seeing a good Friday this week as the main hindi release Maa takes a decent opening while the Hollywood release F1 takes a good start. Both films should do better than expectations as far as the opening day is concerned. F1 is a sports drama based on formula 1 car racing and a Hollywood film like this has never seen an opening of this sort of India.
There have been films on cars like the Fast & Furious series but those are basically big budget action films which have a big market in India but this is more of a drama so this solid initial is a surprise. The film has Brad Pitt who will add some star value for the metros in India but he has had many releases this decade and none have come with an initial like this.
Maa has opened pretty as the horror factor again proves to have an some initial audience. The film did not get much an advance as was open for a day only but there is a response in the morning shows and the film could target that 4 crore nett range. This would be a pretty good number if it can get there and actually good if considering that is competing with F1 and on top a solid holdover like Sitaare Zameen Par.
If Maa gets a good jump on Saturday it will have chances to emerge a success. Normally a jump is expected with smaller films but here its the horror genre which opens in certain mass circuits so these may not jump a lot on Saturday. The markets in the East can be better due to the horror factor and also regional touch in the film. West Bengal should out perform for this film.
