Gandhi Jayanti is one of the biggest holidays of the year and probably among the top five days of the year for box office collections but this year has seen no big release either before it to benefit in midweek or a Wednesday release to take benefit of the opening day and pretty much shows the struggles facing the industry and lack of releases.
Normally you would have a major release targeting a release around Gandhi Jayanti but this year the right sort of film is just not there. It can easily be said that one of the Diwali releases could have come but both teams there feel that their film is perfect for the Diwali period so hence the clash.
Then there is Jigra and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video coming next week and one could have come this week but are these films big enough to come on a Wednesday with the how the state of affairs are today. They might get a national holiday but those two working days till the weekend would have been scary and both are Saturday films so you get into the situation where the story can be over even before the Saturday comes. A week earlier would have meant a clash with Devara so that is probably out of the equation as well.
Basically the industry needed a bigger film with wider appeal if this holiday was not to be missed but sadly there is no film and its the first time this has happened in years that a holiday has gone empty. If Gandhi Jayanti had fallen on Thursday then it is possible that one of the Dusserhra releases could have come but that was not to be. The production sector is in a mess with just two streaming players left with money and they are very cautious as to what they take and what price and its an industry used to a digital deal in place before production which is not as forthcoming leading to a huge drop in films for theatrical exhibition.
